"Gushing Out Blood": Defloration and menstruation in Memoirs of a Woman of Pleasure Sara Read 2134/23625 https://repository.lboro.ac.uk/articles/journal_contribution/_Gushing_Out_Blood_Defloration_and_menstruation_in_Memoirs_of_a_Woman_of_Pleasure/9328889 John Cleland’s 1740s pornographic novel, Memoirs of a Woman of Pleasure repeatedly depicts and eroticises the act of defloration. As such it is a revealing illustration of what Ivan Bloch termed the ‘defloration mania’ of the eighteenth century.
