How primary pupils think about the equals sign is
very important for their arithmetic competence, and
for their later learning of algebra at secondary
school. Research suggests that children think about
the equals sign in three different ways. In this article
we explain these three different ways of seeing the
equals sign, and describe a web-based teaching
intervention that can promote a more sophisticated
understanding.
