The method has arisen historically out of the work of eminent psychologists, but there is wide divergence of opinion regarding the theories and variables underlying the construction, use and effectiveness of programmes. Programmes were written on the topics Determinants and Alternating Current Theory by the author in collaboration with lecturing staff. Draft programmes were tested on small groups of students and subsequently revised on the basis of this experience. Revised programmes were administered to larger groups.
