As women are usually the primary collectors, managers and users of water in the home, and the primary providers of health care to family members, their participation is vital. This paper will draw on the experience of the authors in Ghana, Uganda and Sri Lanka. Wardrop Engineering has recently been engaged in rural water supply and sanitation projects in these countries. The most current and detailed references will be drawn from Wardrop’s extensive experience in northern Ghana. %I Loughborough University
