Establishments of the Office of Ordnance: Long Eighteenth Century

dataset
posted on 2018-11-01, 09:38 authored by Gareth ColeGareth Cole
These visualisation were created in Tableau using data in the associated spreadsheet. The visualisations show the establishments of the various Ordnance yards and out-stations as reported in the Establishment Books - they do not show the total number of employees which could be substantially higher at the larger yards.

The original information comes from various records in the UK National Archives (reference numbers included in the spreadsheet and visualisations).

Latitude and Longitude information (in degrees) was taken from Geonames (https://www.geonames.org/) and then converted into decimal (to four decimal places) to aid mapping. Locations are not specific to the establishment e.g. Portsmouth location is to the city of Portsmouth as given in Geonames rather than the Ordnance Yard.

The visualisations show the increase in number and the internationialisation of the Ordnance establishments during the eighteenth century. In the visualisations, the larger the establishment the larger and more blue the locator spot.
