This is an outcome of a practice-based research project that investigates the relationship of man and nature in Eastern traditional art and philosophy via contemporary digital visualistion technology and transposes the content to contemporary global environmental issues. The video art animation is presented on wall-mounted flat screen displays as video painting. Shizen is the Japanese word for nature and the digital video animation reflects our relationship to nature by transposing the Makimono - the traditional Japanese horizontal hand scroll - into a contemporary manner. The traditional concept of multi-perspective and the endless hand scroll are explored through digital filmmaking, video compositing and virtual camera, depths and particle systems and mixed with life recorded video footage. The ambient ‘video scroll’ presents a poem of the famous Japanese poet Yamabe no Akahito as a reflection on the conflicting relationship struggling between tradition and technological and cultural progress. A global question and challenge arise for mankind: to coexist in harmony or to control, master and exploit nature?

Notes

This is an outcome of a practice-based research project that investigates the relationship of man and nature in Eastern traditional art and philosophy via contemporary digital visualistion technology and transposes the content to contemporary global environmental issues. The video art animation is presented on a wall-mounted flat screen display as video painting. The artistic artefact is disseminated at academic conferences and at international contemporary (digital) media art exhibitions and film festivals. It has so far been shown at two international conferences: International Digital Media Arts Association Conference USA 2015 (Idmaa) and Balance-Unbalance 2016 Conference in Colombia and at eight international exhibitions including VIDEOFORMES Clermond Ferrand France 2016, etc. The outcome continues to be exhibited at further events during this REF period.
