The introduction surveys the development of modern religious drama in Britain. Drawing upon sociological studies, it surveys the religious context within which the drama has been written and received. The focus is on changes in levels of religiosity and the question of secularism. Christianity, particularly Protestantism as the predominant faith, and the status of the Bible in British culture are considered in relation to how religion informs conceptions of national identity and relations between different faith groups. The introduction explains methodology and defines key objectives and terminology. It includes details about the plays and themes explored in each chapter.
