Dementia is a pathology in the brain that causes deterioration in memory function, behaviour, thinking and the ability to perform daily tasks, which results in increased dependency on others (WHO 2022). This is different from normal ageing, which varies from successful ageing to the manifestation of issues with memory and the slowing down of performance on complex tasks (Hogervorst 1998).
