This paper explores how operational teams use visual communication boards for decision-making by conducting a series of experiments comparing how easily teams are able to problem-solve using different visual formats. Quantitative and qualitative research data was considered separately then subsequently brought together and triangulated. The research identified that decision-making was observable and the decision-making process went through a series of observable phases. Analysis reveals new review decision phases additional to the existing literature. This is significant in the context of visual communication boards and decision-making and is the first empirical study exploring how visual communication boards support group decision-making.
