One of the main challenges in future power systems is the enormous integration of generation units using high power converters as interface, it decouples new power sources from the AC power grid, incapacitating a natural frequency response. This situation decreases the total system inertia affecting the ability of power system to overcome system frequency's disturbances. This paper evaluates two inertial controller for full-rated power converter wind turbines, Type 4: (A) releasing hidden inertia controller and (B) fast power reserve emulation. Simulations over a test system are used for a preliminary evaluation of the mentioned inertial controllers. The main contribution of this paper is to demonstrate the main differences between system frequency response (SFR) obtained by each inertial controller and how important is to match wind turbine and system characteristic to improve the SFR.
