An investigation into modern mathematics studied at the secondary level

The type of mathematics which has come to be known as 'modern' (the interpretation of this term must receive careful consideration) is associated with strongly held views within the section of the community interested in mathematical education.

These views can be usually identified as coming from supporters of modern or of traditional mathematics; they have been encountered through personal experiences of teaching in a school, lecturing to teachers who have attended the author's in-service mathematics courses, addressing parent-teacher groups and advising students on university entry.
