Fear of ground motion or tremors appears to be deep-rooted in man, and throughout the animal kingdom down to the simplest species. Man, as a mechanical system, is extremely complex and his mechanical properties readily undergo change. As far as vibration is concerned, man is a system of springs and masses, both amplifies and attenuates vibrations according to the laws of vibration dynamics. consequently, man's sensitivity to vibration is not simple but changes in a complex way with: the frequency of vibration, the magnitude, the duration (exposure time), the site area and direction of transmission of the vibration to the body.
