Solid chemical blowing agent has been used in the production of cellular blown low-density polyethylene film. Extrusion variables that affected the decomposition of blowing agent, hence film quality (film density, tensile properties and surface finish), were investigated in depth. Die development was essential in elimination of die build-up. Reduction of die land length resulted in improved film quality and eliminated die build-up. Melt strength was improved by blending granules with differing melt flow indices. A constant rate of strain viscometer was designed and used in investigating correlation of melt tensile moduli as a function of temperature and EVA content. A correlation of all aspects investigated was attempted.
