The work presented in this thesis concerns the selection, design, analysis and subsequent development of a new hydraulic drive for the control of lifts. The research was sponsored by the Express Lift Company who supplied a specification for the new drive. This enabled project objectives to be formulated. Feasible systems considered for the new drive were variable speed pump drive, pump control and several forms of valve control. These were compared on both performance and cost criteria. An open loop, pressure compensated system was chosen for the new drive and a valve based on this concept was designed and analysed. A prototype was manufactured and then tested in two stages. Firstly, the components were individually laboratory tested. The complete valve was then applied to a lift installation for system testing. [Continues.]
