This section of the Via Appia (Appian Way) in Latina Province is part of the strategically important road that connected Rome with Brindisi in the South East. This photograph features the bridge crossing canale Acque Alte, or 'Canale Mussolini', which displays emblems of the Papacy, Rome, House of Savoy and fascism, as well as a full (weathered) inscription on the roadside facing west, and an erased (covered) inscription on the roadside facing east.
The east side inscription reads: M.CORNELIO CETHEGO CONSVLI THEODORICO ITALIAE REGI SVMMISQVE ROMANIS PONTIFICIBVS LEON X. SISTO V. PIO VI OB CONATVS OPTIMOS ET PRAECLAROS BENE MERENTIBVS
The west side inscription (now completely covered and unavailable) read: REGNANDO VITTORIO EMANVELE III PER VOLONTA DI BENITO MVSSOLINI ED OPERA DEL CONSORZIO DELLA BONIFICA DI PISCINARA PRESIDENTE NATALE PRAMPOLINI NELL 'ANNO IX DELL ERA FASCISTA FVRONO DEVIATE A MARE LE ACQVE TORRRENZIALI CHE GHI INFESTAVANO L'AGRO PONTINO
