Radiological informatics in breast screening: towards improved radiologists' performance

Informatics is omnipresent in modern radiology and is very pertinent in aiding radiologists make accurate diagnoses. Screening programs involving radiological imaging compound the difficulty of appropriate image interpretation due to low abnormality presentation rates amongst the screened population. Breast cancer screening is a good example of this. Various approaches have been examined to aid radiologists in this domain to minimize error rates. In the UK a national self-assessment scheme has been found useful in helping maintain radiologists' screening skills. This has been used successfully for over 20 years with various modifications over time which have employed informatics enhancements as technologies have improved. These are described, together with the latest incarnation, which uses a web-based service to provide improved user experience. © 2012 IEEE.
