Developing the Coach Educator Pedagogy Analysis System (CEPAS): Establishing validity and reliability of a systematic observation instrument
The purpose of this study was to develop and validate an observational coding system to examine the pedagogical practices of coach educators in formal coach education courses, both in classroom and practical settings. The categorization of learning activities and pedagogical behaviors used by coach educators were developed through an iterative combination of literature review, qualitative interviews, and video observation. Through this process, the Coach Educator Pedagogy Analysis System (CEPAS) was developed, which includes six learning activities, 26 primary behaviors, and considers secondary behaviors related to the recipient of the learning intervention. Results support the validity and reliability of the CEPAS. The CEPAS may have important implications for theory development and contributes towards the ongoing learning and development of coach educator’s formal education practices.
