This presentation explores how Shanghai architectural detail provides a source of inspiration for communicating the city's urban graphic heritage. It encourages designers working in the creative industries to look at the city as a source of visual-aesthetic inspiration. It demonstrates the process of translating research into graphic design concepts for the heritage sector, with particular emphasis on city branding, cultural promotion and place identity. The work responds to a project set by Dr Robert Harland and Dr Johnny Xu, and directed by Dr Zhang Xuequing at Tongji University College of Design and Innovation, as part of the AHRC-Newton Fund Repositioning Graphic Heritage research project between Loughborough University (UK) and Tongji University (China).
