This taxonomy was developed to identify human variance in manufacturing operations, with working examples from various manufacturing organisation scenarios. Four organisations participated in either experimental work, and / or industrial workshops to determine the various potential sources of human variance across the sector. The content of this taxonomy was collected through multiple workshops with industry, and validated with further industries to ensure that it is appropriate for use.

The aim of this taxonomy is to be used as a tool, by manufacturing organisations, in order to assist with improving efficiency and safety within manufacturing processes. By adopting this tool, manufacturing companies can in turn control, reduce or remove human variance, regardless of the proposed task.
