Many Pacific Island Countries (PICs) are struggling to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals
(SDGs) and there is strong evidence that climate change is exacerbating existing barriers and
creating new challenges to meeting the SDG targets. Changes in the quality and quantity of water
resources are some of the primary ways in which climate change is predicted to impact human and
ecological systems. In Fiji, climate change is magnifying the country’s natural climate variability
and increasing the intensity of extreme weather events. This research involved a literature review
and semi-structured key informant interviews to gather data on climate-resilient WASH in rural
Fiji. Among the solutions, Drinking Water Safety and Security Planning (DWSSP), Integrated
Water Resource Management (IWRM) and nature-based solutions to hardware were identified as
key to building resilient WASH services.
