The thesis describes the design of a computer-based training system embedded in a
navigation aid. Significantly, the range of techniques considered included so-called
"intelligent" methods which allow more flexibility than conventional computer-based
training techniques. Although the actual design of the training system was a
desired outcome, the process was carried out with two more general objectives. One
objective was to explore the advantages and disadvantages of embedded training
systems. The other was to address the problem of how computer-based training
systems may be designed in a methodical fashion. [Continues.]
