A design for an automated information retrieval system
has been evolved, and a manual simulation of it tested. The main
experimental aspects are:
(a) adding thesaurus terms into a hierarchical classification,
to accomplish more versatile search capabilities than are
possible with existing 'thesaurus-only' or 'classification-only'
systems;
(b) specifying a computer system which could produce its own
manual auxiliary retrieval package to perform a high
proportion of searches without recourse to the main
computer system. [Continues.]
