The research project was initiated by the Rubber and Plastics Research Association (R.A.P.R.A.) of Shawbury who had been carrying out a programme of work into the stabilisation of poly (vinyl chloride) (PVC).
The importance of work on the stabilisation of PVC is due to the fact that from humble beginnings, 500 tons in 1941, production of PVC has increased rapidly to the 200,000 tons mark in 1966 and at that time accounted for 30% of the total thermoplastics.
This dramatic increase is a consequence of the polymer's outstanding properties and its diversity of application.
