It is estimated that about 70% of the total globally produced castings are made of various types of cast irons. Its extensive use is thanks to its excellent casting qualities, good mechanical and thermal properties, as well as its competitive price.

Although cast irons have been used in a number of industrial applications for many decades and they are often exposed to complex thermomechanical loading, its performance under such conditions is not fully identified. This is mainly attributed to their complex microstructure which is difficult to characterise.
