Placemaking through Mandela's graphic heritage
This short film presents an overview of the research impact project Placemaking through Mandela's graphic heritage as part of the Memorialising Mandela in the Metropolis research initiative. The project tested the concept of graphic heritage with archival practitioners, heritage professionals, and creative industry specialists in South Africa. The research was funded by GCRF/Newton Fund Consolidation Funding awarded in December 2022, extending underpinning research developed during the Newton Fund research project Repositioning Graphic Heritage undertaken between 2018–2021 between Loughborough University in the United Kingdom and Tongji University in China. The film features photo documentation undertaken in several locations named after Nelson Mandela in the Gauteng Province of South Africa, as well as coverage of the Exploring Madiba's Graphic Heritage workshop hosted by the Nelson Mandela Foundation in Houghton, Johannesburg, on 2 March 2023. The film may be viewed as an accompaniment to the Placemaking through Mandela's graphic heritage: The UX Sprint of the Umsuka platform account of developing a digital prototype.
