A number of detection processes are proposed, which are developments of the Viterbi Algorithm (VA) detector. These detectors are suitable for use in high speed digital data transmission systems, in which the associated baseband channel introduces severe intersymbol interference. The aim of the project has been to develop algorithms for detection processes, which do not require the large amount of computation that is sometimes needed by the VA. These algorithms should ideally have performances which are close to optimum, and should not be significantly more complicated to implement than the VA. [Continues.]
